Beware of Finns Bearing Gifts

It’s hard to believe that it’s been a good three months since my last review here on Salmiyuck.

Actually, no, it’s not. Salmiac is the sort of thing that you work very hard to forget, and if it weren’t for my good “friend” Matti Nikki, I would have happily forgotten for at least another few months. But no, Matti had to drag me right back in…

So there you have it. Expect a review of the Sahlman roof tar toffee bar soon.

  1. Very interested to hear your opinion of the Fisherman's Friends. I am a devotee of the original flavour (invaluable in combatting congested nasal passages) but the variety you have there is not available in the US.

    You lucky fellow.

  2. Salmiac senders should've included one type of candy that looks bad, but has nothing to do with salmiac. Boy, would that have motivated you to try out everything to find it!

  3. It's "Sisu", not "Gifu".

    1. Indeed, written in the Fraktur style.

    2. Completely understandable though. But yes, it is Sisu written in old styled text.

  4. I was actually thinking of sending some of the finest tar flavoured stuffs too, to show Alex that Finland is not all about salmiakki. Unfortunately I completely forgot about that on the day of Operation Salmiyuck when I went out to gather these goods, I even accidently sent him some duplicates of stuff he already had, although I suppose fresh stuff is always better than old dry candies. Ohwell. Maybe some tar candies in the next care package?

  5. I see you have some Poppamies candy there. Try that first.

    1. Oh yeah, don't forget to take the video camera with you when do you.

Just enjoying their lemon drops myself. Helps with a blocked nose.

    2. Yep, I would like to see it too. The products of Poppamies are top quality. I can guarantee that you will not be dissapointed.

    3. How does that poppamies compare to chilikauppa's Kiukku chilisalmiakki. I totally fell in love with it! However, hotter version 'Nagakiukku' should be avoided if one doesn't have ridicolously high capsaicin tolerance.

    4. Man those Poppamies-"candies" are lethal. You should totally try 'em ASAP! With a videocam, of course :)

  6. Quick! Try the chocolate before it spoils! Even a lot of Finns hate it.

    1. Having tried EVERY salmiakki-chocolate brand out there, I dare say Marabou Black is actually kinda okay in comparison.

  7. Meh. The Pantteri Black Shot is hideous. The best kind is the regular one in the plastic bag.

You probably have some in your original stash, but they've probably gone all hard now. They're still good, but I prefer them when they're soft and you can munch on a mouthful and have them melt into a sweet goo.

  8. It's SISU not GIFU.
