When I received the giant box of Salmiak on that one fateful day, the first candy I tried was the Salmiakkitäytesuklaa. According to box, which actually has some English writing on it, that's apparently Finlandese for "milk chocolate with salmiac filling".
My initial tasting was done weeks before I decided to start chronicling this pungent journey, and thus I feel qualified in saying that this was one of the few candies that has changed in character since first receiving it.
Mostly, the salmiac filling has dried out bit and has gone from a gooey filling to something more consistent with nougat. However, I do prefer the candy in this state, as the mixed textures of semi-soft (chocolate) and gooey (salmiac) was a bit unpleasant.
But no matter. Like all things covered in chocolate (including chocolate-covered ants), the Salmiakkitäytesuklaa was not bad. The chocolate muted the liquorice flavor while the sweetness and saltiness battled it out for dominance. Although sweet prevailed at first, the saltiness was able to hold out and eventually win the fight.
All in all, it was a very slight and gradual transition to the unpleasant sensation of having sucked on some saltlick. But since chocolate was involved, it wasn't that awful of an experience.
Congratulations, Salmiakkitäytesuklaa. You have not only surpassed the edible mark, but made it all the way to almost enjoyable.

that's un-possible!
ReplyDeleteMark my words, by the end you'll be addicted to salmiak!
ReplyDeleteSalmiakkitäytesuklaa isn't too bad, but I prefer Super Salmiakki with plain Fazer milk chocolate ^_^
It's happening...
ReplyDeleteFazer salmiakkitäytesuklaa is too sweet. The chocolate and salmiakki don't mix. Awful candies. Only real salmiakki for me.
ReplyDeleteI dare say, that stuff is starting to eat away at your insides. Seek help. Please.
ReplyDeleteWe're losing him. Quick, do something!!!
ReplyDeleteSalmiakki+chocolated is a vile combination... It just spoils the salmiakki...
ReplyDeleteChocolate and salmiac wont mix too well imho, but what works is salmiac and vodka. Mix about 400g of fine grinded Turkinpippuri with 0.5l of vodka (you can use electric mixer and just dump the Tyrkisk Pebers and vodka there), let it dissolve for few days and prepare yourself mentally. This drink was so popular among the youth here at Finland that the parliament had to ban its sale at the 90s. Now-days it's on sale again although it's less alcohol proof than it used to be.
ReplyDeleteEnd product should be something like this: http://www.flickr.com/photos/add1sun/3566318067/
The drink is known as: Salmiakkikoskenkorva or Salmari for short.
One of the best mixes of chocolate and salmiakki is something they sell in the marketplaces and in one of those "better" chocolate shops.
ReplyDeleteApteekkarin salmiakki mixed in white chocolate!
Absolutely delicious.
Otherwise salmiakki + chocolate mix is bit of a miss. I was very disappointed when these hit the stores and I tasted it for the first time.

ReplyDeleteTry Super Piratos. They're about the strongest "salmiakki" you can get without creating ammonium chloride...
And yummy as h*ll.
Talking about Fazer products (the best candehh in Finland) you should definitely get your hands on to Pantteri, panther in English that is. That's probably the best salmiakki I've had, it's cheap and it's available basically anywhere. There's also like friggin 25 different variations of the candy, like the mix, snow panther, rock mix etc. Most of them suck balls, though the mix offers sweet flavors too.
ReplyDeleteSend him a bottle of strong home made "Salmari" and lets see how wasted he gets o.O
ReplyDeleteYou could also try after keeping them in the fridge for a while, I like them better that way.
ReplyDeleteSeems that Japanese don't like salmiakki either: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7gtMY_27PTc
ReplyDeleteI just tried these for the first time :-) and for a Dane, they are just DELICIOUS
ReplyDeleteThe filling should be almost liquid with this product. Salmiakkitäytesuklaa is probably one of my favorites of all time, even if it came to the shops until a few years ago. Usually I buy a plate and eat it once and for all even noticing... Then comes a bad feeling, too much sugar. But I love it!
ReplyDeleteI think Salmiakkitäytesuklaa is delicious, though always when I ate it it was kinda messy and melted a bit...and probably full on calories, hehe
